Experience Winter Camping at Algonquin Park

Snowshoe across frozen lakes and through waist-deep snow. Learn to winter camp in heated wall tents while gaining hands-on experience with backcountry travel skills. No prior winter travel experience is needed, but this participatory adventure is best suited for those with some camping experience who are looking for an authentic northern adventure.

Authentic Winter Backcountry Experience

Learn winter travel techniques including how to haul toboggans and set up hot tents. Learn about ice safety and how to stay comfortable winter camping.

Hot Tent Camping

Travel by snowshoe to a winter camp. Learn how to set up different types of winter hot tents. Overnight in a heated tent with a billion stars overhead.

Learn & Experience Winter Hot Tent Camping

Winter is a wonderful season for adventure if you have the right skills. Learn about different snowshoes, toboggans and how to winter camp.

No Experience Necessary

It is recommended that you can be active at a walking pace for up to 4 hours at a time.

Best in Class Food

Learn backcountry winter cooking techniques and skills. All meals from lunch day 1 to lunch day 2 are included. Stay an additional night and enjoy dinner and breakfast served in our cabin accommodation!

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1
*Option to arrive the night before for dinner, cozy cabin accommodation and breakfast prior to the 9am rendezvous.

9am Trip start and Rendezvous at Voyageur Quest Base at Algonquin Park Access Point #1. Welcome and orientation re winter gear. Pack out and head out into the winter wilderness. Hauling sleds , on snowshoes travel across lake and forest. Lunch on route. Set up a winter camp. Dinner and hot tent camping in the backcountry.
DAY 2
Breakfast and morning exploration by snowshoe. Learn about safe ice travel and navigation by map and compass. Trek back to the VQ base for a hot lunch. Depart late afternoon.

FAQs for Learn to Winter Camp Adventure

No.  We are “off the grid”  without  electricity or cell phone coverage. Our Instructors carry a satellite phone for emergency communication.  

No. This is a wilderness trip.

Voyageur Quest’s guides are skilled outdoor professionals who ensure your winter camping trip is  safe , fun and  packed with opportunities to learn all about winter travel.  On top of being well versed in the natural and cultural history of Algonquin Park, our guides are warm, personable, and service-oriented. Most are graduates of post-secondary programs related to outdoor adventure and all possess industry certification in wilderness first aid, life-guarding, and  instruction.

Yes you can drive right to our base at Algonquin Park access # 1.  The route from Toronto is on  4-lane divided highway for 280 km. The last 25 km is on  a well maintained  “snow road”.  Snow roads  are plowed into packed down snow which you are able to drive on! Snow tires are recommended. 

-7 sleeping bag, headlamp, good winter boots with removable liners,  along with warm winter clothing with appropriate layers

Solo travelers are welcome! Our groups have up to 5 guests per trip. 

While you do  not require any prior winter travel experience, you should be comfortable camping and have had some summer camping experience. We host a range of guests from first-timers to grizzled outdoor people . This is a participatory adventure  with lots of opportunities to learn.    Our pace is relaxed and the objective is to learn about and experience winter travel and hot tent  camping.

You should be able to be active for up to four hours (walking pace) at a time. While travelling in the backcountry, we make frequent stops for snacks, hydration, and to admire the gorgeous views!

We provide fresh and mostly whole-foods meals that are prepared with care and skill. Whether you are in the backcountry or in our Algonquin Cabins, you will be served appetizers, main courses, and desserts. Our guests are consistently impressed with our elevated cuisine. Please explain in detail any special dietary needs or allergies you might have during your booking. Kid-friendly foods are added to Family Trips.

We are happy to accommodate  dietary requirements. For more speciality diets such as dairy free, vegan or gluten there is an additional charge.  Please be sure to describe your requirement in detail when making your booking. For severe allergies, it is recommended that you bring 2 EpiPens with you.
